song to use: dead to me by Kali Uchis brief

summary of artist: Karly-Marina Loaiza (Kali Uchis), is a 26 year old singer and songwriter from america. In high school, she taught herself to play piano and saxophone which is where her intrest in music began. She began to experiment with other ideas involving music, for example, she had an intrest in photography and this led to her creating mix-tape cover art. During her teenage years, she skipped classes a lot of the time and also broke curfew which led her to be kicked out of her family home. This led to her living in her car for several months. during this time, she wrote poems, songs and music which involved writing songs on her keyboard. Her inital job idea was to be in the film industry rather than music. She deubuted in the music industry in 2012, when she releasted her mixtape 'Drunken Babble' which was described as 'genre-defying.' She also released her first EP in 2015 for further recognition. Her debut studio album, isolation, was released in 2018 to widespread acclaim.

meaning of the song: The song 'dead to me' by Kali Uchis, is based on the idea of finding confidence from a bad situation. This can be shown through the use of phrases and lyrics she uses throughout her song. For example, the most important phrase in which she uses repetitively during the song is 'youre dead to me.' The phrase 'youre dead to me' is usually a phrase which shows disappointment towards somebody who meant something to you. This means that, maybe this person has let you down in some way and maybe you now want nothing to do with them anymore. This phrase is quite a broad phrase as it could be used in loads of different situations such as love, friendships, family relationships and many more. Another important lyric which is also used repetively during the song is 'youre obsessed just let me go'. From what the phrase suggests, the word 'obsessed' is used in a negative form. When somebody is truely obsessed with somebody or something negatively, their interest has come complulsive and they are influenced by emotions. This means that this phrase is all about the idea of somebody being possesive with both thoughts and actions. This could be the emotion of jealousy for example. 'just let me go' suggests that she wants to be away from this situation and that its time for her to move on.

initial narrative ideas for video: In this music video, i want the narrative to be the idea of letting go and moving foward from a bad situation. The idea of this narraitive is based on the lyrics of the song. I want to start the music video off with something that happens which allows the main person to move on. This could be a text message for example. During the music video, i want this person to progress and show them moving on from this bad situation. This then enables the ending to be the main person in a much better state than the start and shows that they are moving on for the better.

initial ideas for use of technical codes in video: (lightingAt the very start of the music video, when the narrative is being introduced and the main person is in a bad situation, i want the lighting to be very dull and dark. However, when the main person is moving on and showing them happier, i want the lighting to be much brighter. The use of lighting will be a combination of natural lighting and studio lighting. (settings) During this music video, i want the settings to remain very minimalistic. For example, i want there to be nothing going on in the background and the whole music video based around the main person. I want the settings to be mainly those involving empty spaces in both public and inside. (props and costume) My initial idea for the costume is to have something very minimalistic but also a statement piece. I want the costume to not fall into basic gender stereotypes and i want to disregard the male gaze theory as much as i can. I want the main person to show her moving on through this choice of costume. The props will be kept very minimal, and maybe the only props shown is those found in a house hold. (use of camera) For this music video, i want most of the camera angles to remain front on with the main person in the centre. However, sometimes i may have the model positioned in different areas such as slightly off centre etc. I want the majority of the shots to be mid shots however, i may also include elements of long shots as well as close ups depending on what is going on during the scene.
