attitude magazine
text Attitude is the best-selling gay magazine in europe. It is a lifestyle magazine, aimed towards those in the LGBTQ+ community. Aswell as being a print magazine, another popular way the audience can read attitude is by their online website. The website is laid out in a way which is acsessable and easy to read. Attitude as a whole covers many different subjects which are becoming spoken about more and more within society, such as sexuality, gender, race and human rights in general. As of today, homosexuality is more socially acceptable so having a magazine fixated around this creates a less of a negative stigma towards gay men and those apart of the LGBTQ+ society.
The layout of the website is in a very clean, conisistent clean layout which is easy to find features and still makes the website looks professional. The newest stories are at the top and other stories are catogrised by topic so you can easily find what you're looking for. On the website, there is also other features such as a navigation bar, search box, picture slideshow, hyperlinks, videos and social media links which helps the audience find attitude on different socia media platforms and also gain an aspect of enjoyment whilst using the website. The colour pallett is very rainbow and bright colours, which is stereotypical of pride colours and the LGBTQ+ colours, where a rainbow is used as a symbolisation. The text as a whole is very informal, which allows the audience to feel as if they're being spoken to by the writer of attitude. However, some of the more serious stories may include formal language to connote the seriousness of the story.
representation and audience :
We are aware that this website was made entirely for gay men and those who enjoy reading gay magazines. Attitude, being a niche audience, shows a lot more of a variety of representations that the mainstream media doesn't cover. It covers serious issues in which gay men in particularly have to deal with. For example, pollitics, identity, homophobia etc. Many of the stories and articles focus on all different types of gay men from different backgrounds etc which is good as it shows that any gay man, would feel welcome. However, it could be argued that it represents a very narrow view on gay masculinity. Alot of the images on the website, more specifically on the 'boys' page is of straight celebrities who may be unaware they are used to be admired by a collective of attitude readers. The articles, apart from showing celebrities, also reinforce alot of masculine stereotypes such as gym bod etc. In the past, attitude has been accused of lacking culture and diversity within their magazine howevever recently more ethnic minories are being encluded which could also expand their audience by doing this. Most of the men in attitude are younger men, however the audience is aimed at more older men.
industry:
Attitude was orginally published in 1994 by Richard Desomd's, who is a previous pornographer and owner of the express which is another online website and newspaper. In 2004, it was then sold and went through a variety of owners until purchased in 2014 by stream publishing, an independent company. This allows more creative freedom aswell as less commercial pressure to push for profit and power. Whilst the company still want to make profit, they do have more descions which other companys may not have the opportunity to do. The website makes lots of money by advertising aswell as display ads shown in their own website and others. The more readership can mean more money for the company and stream publishing.
