key sequence of black flag
key sequence for black flag
the start
At the very begginning, you are shown a sudden explosion and already you can see a cut scene which sets the scene for the action which is about to commence. The action which is introduced involves a ship battle, which already from the view of the player, we can see how much it relates to the theme of the game. This whole first piece of the game, is basically just to highlight the narrative and inform the audience of what the game is about and what is happening. This is so the player isn't just put into the game unsure of what to do. Pieces of dialogue is also used during this cut scene to show the perspective of the character they're playing as. This, from a players perspective, could allow the player to feel a sense of disbelief and make them feel like they are actually there in the avatars perspective.
the game play controls
The cutscene then transforms to the first section of gameplay. This piece of gameplay that we are introduced to is set on the ship. On the screen we can see many different controls and things to help a new player of Assains Creed know what they are doing along with anybody else playing. For example, on the top right we can see controls which tells you which button on your console means what. There are also pop ups which also help with this, where are shown o the top right also. There is also a timer in the top middle which counts down on how long left you have to complete this mission. On the top there is also objectives so you know what to complete and the missions to complete. The player is also given an inventory which allows the player to see what they are currently owning and holding. The game tells you exactly what your mission is and where to go to complete this mission. The graphics alongside the sound effects of the game make the player seem like they are actually experiencing this battle happening.
the gameplay- the ship
This game already has so many aspects which make the game feel so surreal. When we enter the ship and is on the ship, the character has an opportunity of steering a ship. The freedom of steering this ship, allows the ship come in contact with the opposing ship which is trying to start a battle. By being in control of this ship, you as a character may feel like the leader and in charge. Not only is your character given its main objectives, the character is also given extra objectives which are shown in the pop up tabs as explained previously. Seeing as you are steering the ship and is not freelancing and running around, the controls have slightly changed however the instructions onscreen still help you with this. The dialogue of the ship scenes helps the audience enjoy the gameplay more. During some of the scenes on the ship there is cutscenes which adds to the narrative and visuals of the game. This sequence gives an open view of how gameplay has changed and how it continues throughout this game in particular.
the gameplay- on the enemys ship
On this game, you get given the opportunity to board the enemy's ship. By doing this you get to complete some of your missons, aswell as fight with the enemies face to face rather than opposing ships. While you are fighting with these enemy's you get given a health bar ontop of the screen which decreases when somebody hurts you. As you are crossing on to the enemy's ship, the dialogue and sound effects of a fight still continue also. Then when you enter your enemy's ship, it is down to you on your own to battle the enemy's and complete your mission. There are hints across the screen that help you in order to do this. You can also choose your weapons and switch between the two.
the end
The sequence we were chosen to analyse, ends with a second cut scene which is continuing on from the battle that commences. The use of the cut scene adds to the narrative and also gives the player time to understand more of what is going on. In this section of the cutscene, it shows a murder of our captain of the ship, while we are trying to save him. This scene of murder breaks the battle up a bit. The cutscene ends with our character getting thrown overboard by one of the enemy's and then the gameplay starts again while we are now in the ocean.
overall
Overall, the key sequence analysed above, helps us see so far what type of game Black flag is. The game uses many different ways in which this game can help the player to create a narrative aswell as making the game itself a good game. The first example of this is the on screen controls. These controls are helpful on screen controls which allows players which are new to this game understand what buttons means what and how they have to do things in order to complete the missions. The missions are also a very helpful aspect seeing as the player could get a feel of joy when they complete a mission and by doing this, it could encourage the player to keep on playing until all the missions are completed. The player is able to control the character easily aswell as controlling the ship which could make this one of the unique selling points as of the game.
Another example could be the cut scenes. The cut scenes are only rarely used, however when they are used they are used within long gaps of the game and aren't too close together. The use of the cut scenes allow the player build this sense of narrative within the game and also makes them understand what is happening throughout. The first cut scene, which is the shortest cut scene, sets up the gameplay in order to allow new players understand how the game works and what they have to do in order to play the game. The cut scene at the end also does this, however it does portray a different narrative which is our character failing to do something. This cut scene then sets up the next section of the game play which is a crucial development of the story
The graphics and sound throughout also could be another example of this. The graphics are good quality graphics, which makes the gaming experience worth the play. The graphics also makes the game more enjoyable and to an extent, could make the player feel a sense of disbelief. The sound used in this sequence could also do this, allowing the player to feel like they're actually experincing this battle rather than playing it on a console. The dialogue aswell helps the player understand the narrative and situation on what is going on around them, The dialogue also includes extra help which helps the player reach their objectives.
Overall, this game includes very similar gameplay as to previous modern games. For example, the pirates of the caribbean game includes pirates, violence and fighting. Along with many other popular games such as GTA and call of duty which also include the gameplay of fighting and violence, which is very popular against the modern gaming world. This could be one of the reasons as to why this game received a large audience for it.
